British Breeds Mitts Kit
A glimpse into our Knitting in the Northern Borders tour.
Travel to the north of England with us by getting your hands into a British Breeds Mitts Kit. Sheep have been the backbone of England’s textile industry for centuries. Each region of the country bred them to flourish in its particular climate, on available foodstuffs and according to the region’s style of farming. Our kit brings you a sampling of the country's delightful, naturally-colored wool plus information on the source farms and sheep breeds. Work the stranded knitting pattern to create your own pair of extra warm, squish-worthy mitts — with provenance! Kit includes printed pattern, five mini-skeins (approximately 70 – 80 grams of yarn), breed information cards, a sheepy stitch marker and our own Rowan Tree Travel Project bag.
About the designer: Judith Goodfellow is the owner of Fine Fettle Fibres in Northumberland County, England. She designed these mitts specially for Rowan Tree Travel. Her intent, and ours, was to highlight the beautiful array of natural colors produced by sheep in the UK. Judith is also committed to providing a direct conduit between those of us who work with wool and the country’s small-scale producers – many of whom favor the native and conservation breeds overlooked by Britain’s contemporary wool industry. Her shop carries beautiful yarns from West Yorkshire Spinners, Baa Ram Ewe, Garthenor, Blacker Yarns, Cambrian Mountains Wool and more, as well as her own line. We’re especially enamored of Fine Fettle Fibre’s Northumbrian Rose. (Who knew you could knit with rose fibres??? Blend with alpaca and Blue Faced Leicester and voila - yarn magic!) Find a full range of needles, notions, patterns and workshops also on offer when you visit Judith’s shop in person, during our tours, or online at www.finefettlefibres.uk
About the yarn: Yarn included in the British Breeds Mitts Kits is sourced by Judith Goodfellow from a number of British sheep farms and mills. Each kit provides a color swatch and source notes for its five mini-skeins.
Handwash with tepid water, gently press water from fabric, lay flat to dry.
